A 4,000 square foot walk-through aviary in the Bergen County Zoological Park combines birds and vegetation commonly found in North America. The aviary is open April 15-November 15, weather permitting.
Overpeck Park's Leonia North, Palisades Park and Ridgefield Park Areas; Pascack Brook; Riverside Park, both areas; Saddle River Park's Otto C. Pehle and Rochelle Park areas; Samuel Nelkin Park; Van Saun Park.
There are five-mile and three-mile bicycle-pedestrian paths in Saddle River Park. Van Saun Park's 1.5 mile path goes around the lake. There are lakeside paths at Dahnert's Lake, Pascack Brook, Samuel Nelkin Park and Wood Dale Park. At Overpeck's Park in Leonia, a 1.25 mile path forms a figure eight beside the lake. Riverside park's Joseph A. Carrucci Jr. Area and Riverside South Area have paths along the Passaic River.
Two courts each at Dahnert's Lake, Riverside Park's Joseph A. Carucci Jr. Area and Saddle River Park's Rochelle Park Area.
Campsites are available at Campgaw Mountain reservation. Tent camping (pottage access) is available at Ramapo Valley Reservations.
There are many areas throughout the County where playgrounds are available including Belmont Hill Park; Campgaw Mountain Reservation; Dahnert's Lake Park; Darlington Park (entrance fee in swimming season); Overpeck Park's Leonia South Area; Pascack Brook park; Riverside Park, both areas; Samuel Nelkin Park; Van Saun County Park; Wood Dale Park. The Van Saun Park playground nearest the zoo and the playground at Riverside Park's Joseph A. Carucci Jr. Area can be enjoyed safely by all children including those who are disabled.
Van Saun Park has several paths which circle around replicas of 1860s Bergen farmhouses, outbuildings, and gardens. Displays of antiques are also available.
The County is home to many rivers and lakes for fishing including Darlington Park; Saddle River Park's Gen Rock, Otto C. Pehle and Wild Duck Pond areas, and along the banks of the Saddle River where accessible within the park; Samuel Nelkin Park; Van Saun Park; and Wood Dale Park.
The fitness circuit at Riverside Park's Joseph A. Carucci Jr. Area has 18 exercise areas. The circuit is designed for a balanced exercise routine. Overpeck Park's Leonia North Area has a series of 14 mild energizing exercise games on the fitness walking course beside the bicycle-pedestrian path.
There are several football fields in the County for residential use including: Overpeck Par's Leonia North and Palisades Park areas; Pascack Brook Park; Riverside Park, both areas; Saddle River Park's Otto C. Pehle Area; and Samuel Nevin Park.
Van Saun park has shaded gardens at historic Washington Spring. The garden has masses of tulips and petunias in the zoo mall. At the Wildlife Center, a woodland garden with rhododendrons, azaleas, and 25,000 daffodils is available for viewing.
There are four public golf courses in the County including Rockleigh, Overpeck, Darlington, and Orchard Hills.
Darlington Park has two handball courts (there is an entrance fee during swimming season). Pascack Brook Park has one handball court.
Trails are available at Campgaw and Ramapo Reservations. Sketch maps of trails and schedules of guided nature walks are available from rangers at the McFaul center and from the Division of Parks and Recreation Office. There is also a nature trail at the McFaul Center.
There are several facilities in Bergen County for horseback riding including: Overpeck Riding Center in Leonia's Overpeck Park and the Saddle Ridge Riding Area on Campgaw Mountain in Franklin Lakes. Instructions are available at both concession-operated facilities.
Areas with horseshoe facilities include: Overpeck Park; Palisades Park Area; Riverside Park; Saddle River Park's Dunkerhook, Otto C. Pehle, and Wild Duck Pond areas; and Van Saun Park.
Ice skating is available during the winter season throughout the County at the following parks: Dahnert's lake; Pascack Brook Park; Saddle River Park's Gelen Rock, Rochelle Park and Wild Duck Park areas; Samuel Nelkin Park; Van Saun Park; and Wood Dale Park.
Jogging is popular in all the Bergen County parks. See the bicycle paths above for paved trails.
Model-boat sailing is a fun activity which can be pursued in several of the County's parks including: Dahnert's lake; Pascack Brook Park; Saddle River Park's Glen Rock, Rochelle Park and Wild Duck Pond areas; Samuel Nelkin Park; Van Saun Park; and Wood Dale Park.
Throughout the County, naturalists are preparing exhibits, conducting free summer classes, leading nature walks, and presenting programs for school classes and organizations. There are free weekend programs for the public involving guest speakers, guest hike leaders, and films. The McFaul Center in Wyckoff is the hub of activity. Campgaw and Ramapo Reservations also offer some nature education programs and the Bergen County Zoological Park has education programs on animals.
Picnicking is available in: Belmont Hill Park; Campgaw Mountain Reservation; Dahnert's Lake Park; Darlington park (entrance fee during swimming season); Overpeck Park's Leonia South and Palisades Park areas; Pascack Brook Park; Riverside Park, both areas; Saddle River Park, Samuel Nelkin Park; Van Saun Park; and Wood Dale Park. Permits are required for group outings.
There are concession-operated pony rides at Van Saun Park. For information phone the Division of Parks and Recreation.
Van Saun Park operates a railroad which circles the park. The train operates every weekend from mid-April to the end of October.
Shuffleboard courts are available at Riverside Park, Saddle River Park, and Van Saun Park.
Skiing activities are available at the Campgaw Mountain reservation. The Reservation supports ski lifts, machine-made snow, a ski school, and ski shop. Phone 327-7800 for information.
Sledding is popular at Van Saun Park and Samuel Nelkin Park.
Regulation soccer fields exist throughout the County Park system including Overpeck Park, Saddle River Park, and Riverside Park South.
Darlington Park operates a public pool during the summer season. The summer season officially ends on Labor Day. There is an admission fee.
A 12-court tennis center is available within Van Saun Park. the Center is concession-operated, with fees and services. The other parks within the County do not require fees for use of tennis courts (Darlington Park charges an admission fee during swimming season). There are five tennis courts at Riverside Park South; four courts at Darlington Park, Palisades Park and Overpeck Park; three courts at Saddle River Park and Pascack Brook Park; two courts at Riverside Park, Samuel Nelkin Park, and Wood Dale Park.
Overpeck Park and Palisades Park areas boast bluestone running tracks, discus and shot-put
pads, and facilities for pole vault, broad jump and high jump.
Bicycle paths are also for pedestrian use.
Van Saun Park has a large, walk-through zoo. Wild animal exhibits including primates, cats and tropical birds are available. The zoo also boasts a walk-through aviary and a farmyard with domestic animals.
